Ancona is the wild, rugged heart of the Le Marche region. While everyone else is fighting for a spot on a beach in Puglia, the smart travelers in 2026 are heading here for the Riviera del Conero—a stretch of coastline with limestone cliffs and neon-blue water that rivals anything in the Mediterranean.
Ancona is a working port city with a gritty-meets-grand soul, and it’s the perfect base for a week of hidden gems.
Day 1: The Grand Ascent & Roman Roots
Start in the city itself to understand Ancona’s 2,400-year history.
Morning: Hike up to the Cattedrale di San Ciriaco. It sits on the highest point of the city overlooking the Adriatic. The view of the harbor is unbeatable.
Afternoon: Walk down through the Trajan Arch (built in 115 AD) and visit the National Archaeological Museum—it’s housed in a stunning 16th-century palace.
Evening: Walk the Passetto. Take the giant marble staircase (or the glass elevator) down to the sea to see the "Grotte"—caves carved into the cliffs by fishermen.
Day 2: The "Two Sisters" Beach (Sirolo)
This is the postcard shot of the region.
The Experience: Le Due Sorelle is a beach accessible only by boat. Take the ferry from Numana. The water is impossibly clear and the beach is framed by two massive white rocks (the "sisters").
Evening: Explore the medieval town of Sirolo. It’s perched on a cliff and has a central piazza that feels like a movie set.
Day 3: Monte Conero & The Badia
Time to get active. Monte Conero is the only high point on the Adriatic coast from Trieste to Gargano.
The Hike: Take the trail to Pian Grande. You’ll walk through fragrant pine forests with constant views of the sea below.
The Lunch: Stop at the Badia di San Pietro, an 11th-century abbey on the mountain that now houses a beautiful restaurant and hotel.
Day 4: The Grotte di Frasassi (Day Trip)
About an hour inland lies one of the most spectacular cave systems in Europe.
The Wonder: The "Ancona Abyss" inside the cave is so large that the Milan Cathedral could fit inside it.
The Bonus: On the way back, stop at the Temple of Valadier, a church built inside the mouth of a mountain cave. It is peak "hidden gem" aesthetic.
Day 5: Portonovo & The White Rocks
Portonovo is a small bay tucked under the mountain, famous for its wild mussels (Moscioli).
The Move: Rent a sunbed at one of the beach clubs and eat fresh seafood with your feet in the pebbles.
Don't Miss: The Church of Santa Maria della Portonovo, a tiny, 11th-century stone church sitting right on the beach.
Day 6: Loreto & Recanati
A day for culture and spirituality in the rolling hills of Le Marche.
Loreto: Visit the Basilica della Santa Casa, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Italy (it’s said to house the walls of Mary’s home from Nazareth).
Recanati: The birthplace of the poet Leopardi. It’s a classic hilltop town with views that look like a Renaissance painting.
Day 7: Numana & The Turtle Release
Finish your week in the charming colorful town of Numana.
Morning: Walk the "Costarella," a beautiful staircase street lined with pastel houses.
Afternoon: Check if there is a Turtle Release at "Caletta delle Tartarughe." Local volunteers release rehabilitated sea turtles back into the wild here.
Farewell Dinner: Grab a table overlooking the sea and order Brodetto all'Anconetana (a rich 13-fish stew).
Lauren’s "Find My Flights" Strategy: The Ancona Loop
The Flight: Fly into Ancona International Airport (AOI). In 2026, Ryanair runs a very cheap route from London Stansted.
The "Alternative" Route: If flights to Ancona are high, fly to Bologna (BLQ). It’s a major hub. From Bologna, the high-speed Frecciarossa train gets you to Ancona in just 1 hour and 15 minutes for about €20.
Getting Around: You can use the "Conero Bus" in summer, but for this itinerary, a rental car is highly recommended to reach the hidden viewpoints on Monte Conero.
