Imagine stepping up to the starting line on the edge of dramatic alpine cliffs, watching the morning mist rise off Italy’s largest lake. As you run, vertical limestone mountains frame your left while crystal-clear turquoise waters ripple on your right.

Welcome to northern Italy’s ultimate spring race-cation: PEAK Lake Garda 42.

Held annually in April across the scenic northern shore of Lake Garda, this point-to-point running festival connects historic Italian villages, olive groves, and lakefront promenades—finishing beneath the iconic medieval castle of Malcesine.

Whether you’re aiming for a full marathon or a scenic half, here is everything you need to know about planning your Lake Garda race trip for April 2027.

🏃‍♀️ The Races: Marathon or Half Marathon?

What makes Lake Garda 42 so special is its unique point-to-point layout. You don't just run loops around a city; you actively journey across different regions and charming Italian towns along the lake.

The Full Marathon (LG42)

  • Start: Limone sul Garda | Finish: Malcesine

  • The Route: Starting on the cliffside shores of Limone, you’ll head north along the water toward Riva del Garda, looping through lush apple orchards near Arco before following the Sarca River back down to the lakeshore in Torbole. From there, you hug the lake road all the way to Malcesine.

  • The Vibe: Surprisingly flat with minimal elevation gain, smooth asphalt, and non-stop mountain-and-lake views.

The Half Marathon (LG21)

  • Start: Arco | Finish: Malcesine

  • The Route: Starts under the shadow of Arco's hilltop medieval castle, following the river straight down to Torbole before joining the final, breathtaking 15km stretch along the lakeshore to the finish line in Malcesine.

🇮🇹 Where to Eat: Pre-Race Pasta & Post-Race Gelato

In Italy, carb-loading isn't just pre-race prep—it's a cultural experience. Northern Lake Garda is famous for fresh olive oils, homemade pasta, and incredible local wines.

🍝 For Pre-Race Carb-Loading

  • Ristorante Pizzeria La Terrazza (Riva del Garda): Located right on the water, offering light, freshly made pasta with clean tomato sauces or local lake fish—perfect for an easy-to-digest dinner before race day.

  • Pizzeria Spaghetti Bar Trentino (Arco): A fantastic, low-key spot near the half-marathon start line serving up simple, delicious pre-race carb options without heavy cream sauces.

☕ For Pre-Run Espresso & Pastries

  • Bar Cafè Bellavista (Limone sul Garda): Sip an authentic Italian espresso on the waterfront terrace as you watch the sun come up over the lake before heading to the marathon start corrals.

🍷 For the Ultimate Post-Race Victory Feast

  • Ristorante Vecchia Malcesine (Malcesine): Located near the finish area, this Michelin-starred gem offers elevated local dining with views over the lake—the ultimate spot to celebrate crossing the finish line.

  • Trattoria Da Umberto (Malcesine): A cozy, traditional spot in Malcesine’s old town cobblestone alleys serving fresh homemade tagliatelle, wood-fired seafood, and crisp local white wine (Lugana).

  • Gelateria Cento per Cento (Malcesine): You cannot cross an Italian finish line without gelato! Head here for artisanal, small-batch gelato right after getting your finisher medal.

🏨 Where to Stay: Choosing Your Base Town

Because the event relies on free runner ferries and shuttles connecting the towns, picking your accommodation depends on your preferred race weekend style:

  • Malcesine (Best for Finish Line Ease): Stay near the finish line so you can walk straight to your hotel after the race, grab a shower, and enjoy the post-race festival atmosphere.

  • Riva del Garda (Best for Atmosphere & Shopping): The main hub of northern Lake Garda, offering vibrant squares, grand lakefront hotels, and easy access to race bib pick-up.

  • Limone sul Garda (Best for Marathoners): Wake up steps from the LG42 start line in a town famous for its historic cliffside lemon houses.

🗺️ Beyond the Finish Line: What to Do on Lake Garda

  • Take the Monte Baldo Cable Car: Located in Malcesine, this rotating cable car takes you 1,800 meters up to the peak of Monte Baldo for panoramic views over the entire lake.

  • Ferry Hop to Limone & Riva: Use the local passenger ferries to explore the colorful harbor towns from the water.

  • Explore Scaligero Castle: Walk through the 13th-century stone fortress that guards Malcesine’s harbor.
