📅 When to Visit Malta: The 2026 Season Guide

The "Sweet Spot": May, June & September

If you want the perfect balance of warm sea temperatures and manageable crowds, these are your months.

  • Why go then: The weather is a gorgeous 24°C–28°C, meaning it’s hot enough for a boat trip to the Blue Lagoon but cool enough to hike the Dingli Cliffs without melting.

  • The 2026 Perk: September is particularly magical because the Mediterranean has been heating up all summer, making the water feel like a warm bath.

  • Top Event: Catch the Earth Garden Festival in early June (June 4–7, 2026)—it’s Malta’s best alternative music and gold-standard "eco" festival.

Peak Summer: July & August

This is Malta at its most vibrant, but it’s not for the faint of heart.

  • The Vibe: High energy, packed beach clubs, and soaring temperatures (often hitting 32°C+). This is prime time for nightlife and boat parties.

  • The Crowd Factor: Expect the popular spots like St. Peter’s Pool and Valletta's waterfront to be very busy. You’ll need to book your "Top 10 Stays" months in advance.

  • Don't Miss: Isle of MTV (July 15, 2026)—it’s one of Europe’s largest free open-air concerts held right in Floriana.

The Sightseer’s Dream: March & April

If your goal is history, photography, and exploring the "Silent City" of Mdina, spring is your best friend.

  • Why go then: The islands are surprisingly green and covered in wildflowers (before the summer sun turns everything golden). It's the best time for walking the historic bastions.

  • Budget Tip: Flight prices and hotel rates are significantly lower than in the summer months.

  • Top Event: Festa Frawli (The Strawberry Festival) in Mġarr happens in April. It’s a literal feast of locally grown strawberries, from wine to ravioli!

Winter Sun: November to February

Malta is one of the sunniest spots in Europe during winter, with over 300 days of sunshine a year.

  • The Vibe: Calm, local, and incredibly affordable. While it’s too cold for swimming, it’s perfect for a cozy city break in Valletta.

  • The Weather: Mild, with highs around 16°C. You'll need a light jacket for the evenings, but you'll often have the ancient temples entirely to yourself.

  • Top Event: Valletta Baroque Festival (January 8–25, 2026)—world-class music performed in stunning historic venues.

Lauren’s Quick Verdict:

"Go in late September. You get the 'Summer Vibe' with 30% fewer people, the water is still 25°C, and the evening breeze in Valletta is pure perfection."

Day 1: Valletta – The Fortress City

Start in the capital, a UNESCO World Heritage site that feels like an open-air museum.

  • Morning: Walk through the Upper Barrakka Gardens for the best view of the Grand Harbour. Catch the noon-day gun salute.

  • Afternoon: Visit St. John’s Co-Cathedral. Don't let the plain exterior fool you; the inside is dripping in gold and houses Caravaggio’s masterpiece. You can book a walking tour of the city here.

  • Evening: Have dinner on the steps of St. Lucia’s Street. It is peak "Malta Aesthetic" with lanterns and wine bars.

Where to stay in Valletta

For high end unforgetttable luxury, The Inialia Harbour House offers uniquely designed rooms in this harbor-front sanctuary. The exotic grotto-like indoor pool invites late-night swims after dining at the Michelin-starred restaurant with ocean views. From rooftop hot tubs, guests savor panoramic vistas of Valletta's harbor.

For the budget traveller, staying a little further outside of Valetta you will find the Dun Gorg Guest House starting at only £69 per couple per night. Situated only 13 minutes drive form Luqa airport within Marsaxlokk Bay, it is perfect base to explore the area.

Day 2: The Three Cities & Blue Grotto

  • Morning: Take a traditional dghajsa (Malta’s version of a gondola) across the harbour to the Three Cities (Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua). They are much quieter than Valletta and very authentic.

  • Afternoon: Head south to the Blue Grotto. Take a 20-minute boat ride into the sea caves to see the neon-blue water.

  • Sunset: Visit the Hagar Qim Temples—prehistoric structures that are older than the Pyramids!

For an unusual stay, Riti Yaught offers you the chance to stay right on the water. Top rated accommodation for couples with a fabulous breakfast included.

The Lodge located in Vittoriosa marina is a beautiful boutique hotel with unique rooms and top rated hosts.

Day 3: Mdina & Rabat

  • Morning: Head inland to Mdina, the "Silent City." It was the ancient capital and is a maze of narrow, honey-colored limestone streets.

  • Lunch: Grab a slice of the famous chocolate cake at Fontanella Tea Garden for views over half the island.

  • Afternoon: Explore Rabat, just outside the gates, and visit the St. Paul’s Catacombs.

The Palazzo Bifora a Boutique hotel tucked away in the incredible medieval streets of Mdina. Rooftop restaurant with a view and a pool.

For a more budget friendly hotel, The Domus Boutique Hotel is a top rated option dircetly within the city.

Day 4: Gozo – The Rugged Sister Island

Take the ferry (or the fast ferry from Valletta) to Gozo. It’s greener, quieter, and more rural.

  • Highlights: Visit the Cittadella in Victoria, the Ggantija Temples, and the stunning Salt Pans on the northern coast.

  • Swim: Head to Ramla Bay, famous for its unique orange-red sand.

Day 5: The Blue Lagoon (Comino)

This is the "bucket list" day.

  • The Move: Take a boat trip to the tiny island of Comino.

  • Lauren’s Tip: In 2026, the Blue Lagoon gets very busy. Book a boat that leaves early (8:00 AM) or head to Crystal Lagoon nearby for equally blue water with half the crowds.

Day 6: Marsaxlokk & St. Peter’s Pool

  • Morning: Visit the fishing village of Marsaxlokk. Sunday is the big market day, but any day is great for seeing the colorful Luzzu boats (the ones with the eyes on the front).

  • Afternoon: A 20-minute walk away is St. Peter’s Pool, a natural limestone pool perfect for cliff jumping into the sea.

Day 7: Sliema, St. Julian’s & Departure

  • Morning: Walk the long promenade from Sliema to St. Julian’s. This is the more modern, bustling side of Malta with great shopping and cafes.

  • Afternoon: Take one last dip in the rocky lidos of Fond Għadir before heading to the airport.
