Forget the Amalfi Coast—if you want clear water, dramatic cliffs, and a holiday that actually fits your budget, you need to head to Tropea.
Located in Calabria (the "toe" of Italy's boot), this stretch of coastline is known as the Costa degli Dei—the Coast of the Gods. According to legend, Hercules himself founded the town. Today, it’s a paradise of white sand, 12th-century architecture, and some of the best food in Italy.

1. Visit the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola
This is the "postcard" shot of Tropea. It’s a medieval monastery perched on a rocky promontory jutting out into the sea.
The View: Climb the stone steps for a panoramic view of the coastline and, on a clear day, the volcanic island of Stromboli.
Cost: A small fee to enter the gardens, but viewing the rock from the beach is totally free!
2. Beach Hop at Spiaggia della Rotonda
Directly beneath the town’s cliffs lies the main beach. The sand is white, and the water is so turquoise you’ll think you’re in the Caribbean.
Lauren’s Hack: Skip the expensive "Lido" (private beach clubs) where sunbeds can cost £30+. Head to the Spiaggia Libera (free beach) areas. Just bring your own towel and enjoy the exact same water for £0.
3. Try the Famous "Red Onion Gelato"
Yes, you read that right. Tropea is world-famous for its Cipolla Rossa (sweet red onions). They are so mild you can eat them raw, and they show up in everything—including ice cream!
The Taste: It’s surprisingly sweet and savory. Head to Gelateria Tonnino for a scoop and a sunset view.
4. Take a Boat Trip to Capo Vaticano
Just 20 minutes south is Capo Vaticano, where the cliffs get even more dramatic.
The Move: Rent a small "Gozzo" boat or join a snorkeling tour to reach hidden coves like Praja di Fuoco, which are only accessible by sea.
5. Get Lost in the Centro Storico
The old town is a maze of 17th-century palazzos built right onto the edge of the cliffs.
The "Affacci": Look for the stone balconies (affacci) at the end of the narrow streets. They offer dizzying views straight down into the sea.
Lauren’s "Find My Flights" Strategy: How to get there cheap
Getting to the deep south of Italy used to be a mission, but for 2026, it’s a budget traveler's dream:
The Airport: Fly into Lamezia Terme (SUF).
The Airlines: Ryanair and easyJet run direct flights from London Stansted and Gatwick for as low as £30 return in May, June, and September.
The Transfer: Don't pay for a £100 taxi! Take the shuttle bus from the airport to Lamezia Terme train station (£1.50) and then the local train to Tropea (£4.50). The journey takes about an hour and is incredibly scenic.
