Forget the crowded promenades of Nice or Cannes. If you’re looking for a 2026 summer escape that combines vintage glamour, fresh sea air, and a palette of colors that would make a rainbow jealous, you need to put Mers-les-Bains on your radar.

Located on the "Alabaster Coast" (Côte d'Albâtre) at the border of Normandy and Picardy, Mers-les-Bains is part of the "Three Sister Cities" (along with Le Tréport and Eu). It is widely considered one of the most beautiful and architecturally unique seaside resorts in France.

Mers-les-Bains

🏛️ A Journey Back to the Belle Époque

The star of the show is the Quartier Balnéaire. In the late 19th century, wealthy Parisians flocked here by train to "take the waters." They built over 500 villas, each more eccentric than the last.

  • The Architecture: Walk the Esplanade du Général Leclerc to see the iconic façades. Look for intricate wrought-iron balconies, ornate ceramic tiles, and bright "bow windows" painted in every shade from mint green to deep crimson.

  • The "Bather’s Festival": If you visit during the last weekend of July (Fête des Baigneurs), the entire town dresses in 1900s period costumes, with horse-drawn carriages and vintage bathing suits. It is pure time-travel magic.

🌊 The Best Things to Do in 2026

1. Climb to Notre-Dame de la Falaise

Follow the path up to the top of the chalk cliffs (about 100 meters high). You’ll find the golden statue of Notre-Dame des Flots watching over the sailors. The panoramic view of Mers-les-Bains, the port of Le Tréport, and the endless blue of the English Channel is unbeatable.

2. The Coastal Path to Ault

For hikers, the Sentier du Littoral starts here. It’s a 6km walk along the cliff tops to the village of Ault. The air is iodized and fresh—perfect for a "Coolcation" recharge.

3. Beach Life (with a Twist)

The beach is made of large, smooth pebbles, but at low tide, a vast stretch of fine sand is revealed. In the summer, hundreds of white beach cabins line the shore, creating a perfect backdrop for photos.

🍽️ Where to Eat: Seafood & Sunsets

Because Mers-les-Bains is a working port's neighbor, the seafood is incredibly fresh.

  • Gastronomic Choice: L’Itinérance. Run by a former Michelin-starred chef from Paris, this is the best table in town. Book weeks in advance for 2026!

  • Seafront Classic: Les Mouettes. Simple, fresh, and perfect for a bowl of moules-frites (mussels and fries) while watching the sunset over the water.

  • Local Treat: Try the Ficelle Picarde, a savory crepe stuffed with ham, mushrooms, and cream—a local Picardy specialty.

✈️ The 2026 "Find Your Flights" Strategy

Mers-les-Bains is an easy add-on to a Paris trip or a standalone weekend break.

  • From Paris (Train): Take the TER from Paris Nord to Beauvais, then transfer to the train for Le Tréport-Mers. Total time is approx. 3 hours.

  • The "Lille Link": If you’re coming from the UK via Eurostar, Mers-les-Bains is only 2 hours from Lille by car.

  • Pro Tip: If you’re flying in, Paris Beauvais (BVA) is actually closer than Charles de Gaulle! Check Ryanair or Wizz Air flights to BVA for the cheapest 2026 entry point.

🏨 Where to Stay

Stay in one of the historic villas for the full experience. Many have been converted into charming apartments.

  • Boutique Stay: Look for Villa Fantaisie or Villa les Néréides on the seafront for the best views.

  • Sister City Hack: If Mers-les-Bains is fully booked, stay in Le Tréport and take the free funicular down to the port—it’s just a 10-minute walk between the two towns!
