Top 10 Things to Do in Léon
Boat Trip on the Courant d’Huchet: Known as the "Amazon of the Landes," this nature reserve is a must. Take a traditional guided boat tour from the lake to the ocean.
Laze at Lake Léon: The freshwater lake is perfect for families. It has sandy beaches and calm, shallow waters that are much warmer than the Atlantic.
The Morning Market: Every morning from mid-June to September, the village square transforms into a vibrant market. It’s the best place to grab local duck confit and Landes honey.
Cycle the Vélodyssée: This famous Atlantic cycle path runs right through Léon. Rent a bike and ride through the pine forests to nearby beaches.
Beach Day at Moliets-et-Maa: Just a 10-minute drive away is one of the most stunning, wild Atlantic beaches in France.
Paddleboarding & Kayaking: The lake is a hub for water sports. It’s flat and safe, making it ideal for beginners.
Explore the Church of Saint-André: A beautiful example of local architecture with a warm, welcoming village atmosphere.
Hike the Nature Reserve Trails: If you prefer land to water, there are several marked trails through the marshes and dunes of the Courant d'Huchet.
Stroll the "Brick and Half-Timbered" Houses: The village itself is incredibly picturesque, with traditional Marensin-style architecture.
Night Markets: In July and August, Wednesday nights are for the night market—full of local crafts, music, and street food.
📍 3 Best Places Nearby (Day Trips)
Hossegor (30 mins): The surfing capital of Europe. Even if you don't surf, the boutique shopping and "California-cool" vibe are worth the trip.
Dax (35 mins): Famous for its thermal hot springs and Roman history. It’s a great spot for a spa day.
Biarritz (1 hour): A glamorous seaside town with royal history, incredible Basque architecture, and world-class seafood.
✈️ How to Get There from the UK
By Air (The Quickest Way)
Fly to Biarritz (BIQ): This is the closest major airport. Ryanair flies direct from London Stansted, and EasyJet flies from London Gatwick.
Fly to Bordeaux (BOD): A larger hub with more frequent flights from across the UK (London, Bristol, Manchester, Edinburgh).
Onward Travel: From Biarritz, it’s a 1-hour drive north to Léon. From Bordeaux, it’s about 1 hour 30 mins south. I highly recommend hiring a car as public transport in the Landes forest is limited.
By Car (The Road Trip Route)
Driving to Léon is a popular choice for UK travelers because it allows you to pack surfboards, bikes, and plenty of wine on the way back!
The Crossing: Take the LeShuttle (Folkestone to Calais) or a ferry to Calais, Caen, or St Malo.
The Drive from Calais: It’s a long haul—about 9 to 10 hours of driving. You’ll head south on the A28 and A10 (the "Autoroute des Estuaires").
The Drive from Caen/St Malo: Much shorter! It’s about 6 to 7 hours south through Brittany and the Loire Valley.
Lauren’s Tip: If driving from Calais, stop for a night in La Rochelle or Bordeaux to break up the trip.
📅 Best Time to Go in 2026
July & August: The peak of summer. The night markets are in full swing and the lake water is at its warmest.
September: My personal favorite. The "Back to School" rush is over, the weather is still a beautiful 22°C, and the Atlantic waves are at their best for watching surfers.
