If you want the beauty of the French Alps without the ski-resort crowds, and the flavor of Provence without the Riviera prices, you go to the Diois. This region in the Drôme department is where "Alpine" meets "Mediterranean."

1. Die: The Vibrant Roman Capital

Die is the heart of the region. It’s a town that feels ancient yet surprisingly "alternative" and artistic.

  • Clairette de Die: You cannot visit without tasting this. It’s a naturally sparkling, sweet white wine made using the "ancestral method." Visit the Maison Jaillance to learn the history and grab a bottle for a river picnic.

  • Roman Heritage: Look for the Porte Saint-Marcel, a massive Roman gate that has stood for nearly 2,000 years.

  • The Market: Every Wednesday and Saturday, the town explodes with color. It’s one of the best markets in the Drôme for local honey, goat cheese (Picodon), and herbal crafts.

2. Châtillon-en-Diois: A "Plus Beau Village"

Recently named one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, Châtillon-en-Diois is a medieval maze at the foot of the Glandasse mountain.

  • The "Viols": These are the tiny, narrow, flower-filled alleyways that weave through the village.

  • Botanical Village: Châtillon is a certified botanical village—look for the unique plant species labeled throughout the streets.

  • The Wine: While Die is for bubbles, Châtillon is known for its still AOC wines (Gamay and Chardonnay).

3. Luc-en-Diois & "Le Claps"

Luc-en-Diois is home to one of the most spectacular natural sights in France: Le Claps.

  • The Legend of the Rockfall: In 1442, a massive part of the mountain collapsed into the Drôme river, creating a giant chaos of limestone boulders.

  • The "Saut de la Drôme": The river forms a stunning waterfall through the rocks. In the summer of 2026, this is the ultimate spot for swimming, bouldering, and picnicking in the shade of the pines.

  • Via Ferrata: If you’re an adrenaline junkie, the Via Ferrata du Claps offers a vertical climb with breathtaking views of the valley.

4. Les Gorges des Gâts: The Hidden Canyon

Located just outside Châtillon-en-Diois, the Gorges des Gâts is a deep limestone canyon that feels like a mini-Verdon.

  • The Drive: The road (D120) clings to the cliffside and offers dramatic viewpoints at every turn.

  • Swimming: Look for the "secret" emerald pools along the riverbed. It’s much quieter than the main Drôme river.

📅 2026 Events in the Diois

  • Fête de la Transhumance (Die): June 20–21, 2026. Watch thousands of sheep march through the streets of Die as they head to the high mountain pastures for the summer. It’s a massive folk festival with music and food.

  • Vercors Music Festival: Late June/Early July. High-altitude concerts with a focus on indie and eco-friendly vibes.
