It’s one of the oldest towns in the Balkans, built inside the crater of an extinct volcano. In 2026, it remains the ultimate "time travel" destination—a place of medieval towers, stone bridges, and some of the best food in the country.
1. Cross the Medieval Stone Bridges
Kratovo is defined by its dramatic topography. The town is split by deep ravines, connected by a network of ancient Ottoman stone bridges.
The Radin Bridge: The most famous and most photographed. Legend says a woman was built into its foundation to ensure it stood forever (a common, albeit dark, Balkan folk tale).
The Grovchi Bridge: Offers the best view of the town's vertical architecture.
2. Climb the Clock Tower (Sahat Kula)
Kratovo was once a wealthy mining hub for gold and silver, protected by 12 defensive towers. Six still stand today.
The Experience: You can climb the Clock Tower for a small fee (usually around £1). The wooden interior is original, and the view from the top across the terracotta rooftops is the best in the city.
3. Witness the "Stone Dolls" of Kuklica
Just 15 minutes outside of town lies one of the most bizarre natural wonders in the Balkans.
The Legend: A field of over 120 naturally formed stone pillars that look remarkably like people. Local lore says they were a wedding party turned to stone by a jilted bride.
Scientific Reality: They are rare volcanic erosion formations, but the "wedding party" story makes for much better photos.
4. Eat Like a Local (The "Pastrmajlija" Hack)
Kratovo has its own version of the famous Macedonian "pizza," called Pastrmajlija.
The Dish: A long, doughy bread topped with cubed pork and salt. In Kratovo, they often add a local twist with smoked meat.
Lauren’s Tip: Visit Gostilnica Kratovo—it’s where the locals eat, and a meal for two with drinks will rarely cost more than £12.
5. Explore the Underground Tunnels
Because it was a mining town, Kratovo is rumored to be honeycombed with secret underground tunnels connecting the defensive towers. While many are closed, local guides can often show you hidden entrances in the basements of old houses.
Lauren’s "Find My Flights" Strategy: How to get to Kratovo
Kratovo is an easy day trip or an overnight stay from the capital.
The Route: Fly Manchester ➔ Skopje (SKP).
The Bus: Go to the main Skopje bus station. Buses to Kratovo run several times a day and cost about £4. The journey takes roughly 90 minutes.
The 2026 Hack: If you’re a group of 3 or 4, hire a taxi for the day from Skopje. It will cost around £40–£50 and allows you to stop at the Stone Dolls and Kokino (a 4,000-year-old megalithic observatory) on the way.
