1. Be Awestruck by Myrtos Beach
You’ve seen it on every Greek travel poster. Myrtos is a mile-long semi-circle of white pebbles tucked between two towering mountains.
The View: Don't just go to the beach; stop at the viewpoint on the road above for that famous turquoise-water shot.
Lauren’s Tip: The current is surprisingly strong here. If you're a weak swimmer, stick to the edges or head to Antisamos Beach for calmer waters.
2. Row Through Melissani Cave (The Underground Lake)
This is a literal natural wonder. When the cave roof collapsed centuries ago, it created a stunning underground lake that glows neon blue when the sun is directly overhead (around noon).
The Experience: You take a small rowing boat with a guide who whistles and sings to show off the cave’s incredible acoustics.
3. Wander the "Pastel Village" of Assos
Assos is arguably the most romantic spot on the island. It’s a tiny village of colorful Venetian houses built on a narrow strip of land leading to a 16th-century castle.
The Move: Hike up to the Assos Castle ruins for a panoramic view of the coastline. It’s free and usually very quiet.
4. Spot Sea Turtles in Argostoli
The capital city, Argostoli, has a long promenade where the local Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta) sea turtles hang out every morning by the fishing boats.
The Best Time: Go between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM. They follow the fishermen back to the harbor to eat the scraps—it’s a free "safari" experience!
5. Climb the "Dark Mountain" (Mount Ainos)
Kefalonia is home to a massive National Park. Mount Ainos is famous for its unique "Kefalonian Fir" trees and wild horses that roam the slopes.
The Reward: On a clear day, you can see all the way to the islands of Zante, Ithaca, and even mainland Greece.
Lauren’s "Find My Flights" Strategy: The Kefalonia Hack
The Flight: Direct flights from Manchester (MAN) to Kefalonia (EFL) with easyJet or Jet2 are currently seeing some "June Glitch" prices as low as £34.99 one way.
Getting Around: Unlike the small islands, you really need a car here. However, in 2026, the local KTEL bus service has expanded. You can now get a bus from Argostoli to Myrtos and Fiskardo for under €5.
Where to Stay: If you're on a budget, look at Lassi or Sami. Lassi is walking distance to some of the best beaches and just 5 minutes from the airport, saving you a fortune on taxis.
